Quality is an engineering discipline
Testing is often treated as a final phase — a check performed after development is complete. In practice, the reliability of a system is largely determined by decisions made much earlier: how requirements are written, how the system is designed and how changes are verified.
Quality engineering treats reliability as something designed and built in, rather than inspected at the end.
Test at the right levels
Effective test strategies use different kinds of tests for different purposes, balancing speed, confidence and maintenance cost.
- Unit tests verify individual pieces of logic quickly.
- API tests verify behaviour and contracts independently of the interface.
- End-to-end tests, using tools such as Playwright, verify critical user journeys through the whole system.
Automate what provides lasting value
Automation is most valuable for checks that must be repeated on every change — particularly regression tests that protect existing behaviour. Automated suites should be fast, stable and maintained like any other code, or they quickly lose the trust of the team.
Make quality part of the pipeline
When automated checks run in a CI/CD pipeline, every change is verified before it reaches users. Quality gates make expectations explicit and turn release decisions into evidence-based decisions.
Reliability builds trust
For organisations that serve the public, process payments or handle sensitive information, reliability is directly connected to trust. Investing in quality engineering is ultimately an investment in that trust.
